How the Beach Bistro got its start
Founder Sean Murphy was a former resident of Halifax, Nova Scotia who graduated from Dalhousie Law School but maintained his interest in the culinary arts.
This passion for food led him to New Orleans where he learned the restaurant business from Archie Casbarian at Arnaud’s and later Dr. Murf Klauber at the Colony Beach and Tennis Resort on Longboat Key.
Murphy then found the perfect destination for his own dream upscale restaurant on Anna Maria Island. However, before quickly becoming one of Anna Maria Island’s premier seafood restaurants, the Beach Bistro had a somewhat shaky opening.
Murphy and his wife Susan Timmins launched it in the fall of 1985 amidst a hurricane that pounded the restaurant for days. In spite of the weather related challenges, the restaurant opened right on time on November 1st and barely within budget, and it was an immediate local hit.
