If you’re planning a trip to stay in one of our Anna Maria Island vacation rentals, be sure to take a day trip over to Sarasota! This city on the mainland is just a short trip from AMI and can easily make the perfect afternoon excursion.
There are things to do in Sarasota for people of all interests, making it the ideal addition to any family vacation. Here’s a quick breakdown of what to know before you visit Sarasota!

History
Sarasota was first incorporated in 1902 with just about 50 residents in the town. By 1913, it had been incorporated as a city and began to see quite the jump in population, thanks in large part to the emergence of the railroad. The Ringling Brothers were attracted to the area during their prime, and it’s still easy to see the influence of John Ringling in town today. Sarasota experienced an economic boom following World War I, though it suffered greatly during the Great Depression. With all its ups and downs over the decades, Sarasota now remains a vibrant community full of welcoming locals.
Attractions
Sarasota is one of the most family-friendly destinations in the area, as it has tons of attractions to suit everyone’s tastes. First, you can stroll through the beauty of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and witness the properties that have been magnificently upkeep over the years. This attraction is popular for all, but nature lovers will especially appreciate it. You can also check out the Sarasota Jungle Gardens, which dubs itself “Sarasota’s favorite family attraction!” They’ve got all kinds of incredible animals for guests to meet, including reptiles, birds of prey, and even free-roaming flamingos!
Another “can’t miss” attraction is the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, perfect for spending a rainy afternoon or escaping the heat of summer. You can see tons of unique pieces of art that John and Mable Ringling collected throughout their lifetimes, as well as exhibits and artifacts from John’s circus days! And this is only the beginning. You can also experience water sports, mini-golf, and every other family activity you can think of!

Downtown
Downtown Sarasota is definitely a spot you won’t want to miss out on. Head down Main Street to witness the colorful bungalows and step into the local shops for a true taste of what it means to be a local. You can grab a bite from a local bakery, participate in a yoga class, get pampered at the salon, or simply enjoy the wonderful weather!
If you want to stop for a meal while you’re here, downtown Sarasota has tons of great restaurants. Experience farm-to-table cuisine at Boca Sarasota, try some Peruvian dishes at Selva, go for sushi at FushiPoke, or sample some unique New American cuisine at Mattison’s City Grille. There’s something for every palate!
