Biking on Anna Maria Island

With the wind in your hair and the cool blue gulf as your backdrop, biking in Anna Maria Island is a blast. We’ve covered everything you need to know about biking the island, including the top rental providers, places to go, and tips for getting the most out of your pedaling adventures.

About

With an assortment of scenic routes, different backdrops, and bike-friendly street ways, biking on Anna Maria Island is captivating and rewarding. Due to the small size of the island, biking is encouraged by the local city. There are multiple bike racks throughout the island, particularly in the northern part of the island, known as downtown Anna Maria. At just seven miles in length, you could realistically get from one side of the island to the other and back in a day’s trip.

The most popular bike path carries you and your crew through the heart of Coquina Beach, which is one of Anna Maria Island’s best beaches. Known as the Coquina Beach Bike Path colloquially, you begin at Coquina Beach and bike, mostly along the water, north towards Bradenton Beach. Coquina Beach is located directly west of Leffis Key Preserve, one of the island’s top sights for natural sightseeing. While you can bike on the paths, they are rather narrow and tight. It is good for avid biking experts, but less so for families with kids.

We recommend taking an early afternoon trip to Leffis Key via and walk the boardwalks to the beach.

Biking is widely embraced. When you stay at one of our top-rated rentals on Anna Maria Island, you can rent a bike a piece for everyone and cruise along this seven-mile strip of beloved beachside.

Rentals

Anna Maria Island bike rentals are prevalent. One of our favorite providers is Beach Bums. The small beach-loving team has an assortment of rental options, including four-person manual cruisers, kayaks, golf carts, and canoes. The bikes are varied, with special sizes for the youngsters in your family and geared bikes for “off-road” bicycling. Customers can also select from a series of fun tricycles (young and old alike) as well as tandem bikes if you want to pair up or you have a tot in tow.

Fun and More Rentals is another local favorite, with excellent options for beach cruising. The rental provider has baby supplies, beach gear, such as umbrellas, coolers, chairs, and jackets, and electric street-legal golf carts. The bikes are, of course, the top choice for many, with specific selections for men, women, kids, and tandem.

Other local providers include the funky AMI Beach Fun Rentals in Holmes Beach and the Island Scooter store if you want to eye the fun (and fast!) available scooters.

Tips

Of course, the absolute top priority, aside from fun, is safety. This is why we have compiled four quick and simple safety tips to follow and pass along to your family.

  • Follow the Flow of Traffic: You should ride with the flow of traffic, and not against it. You have no chance to react if a vehicle is coming straight at you and any impact will be greatly intensified.
  • Always, Always, Always Follow Cross Street Walkways: Don’t Assume a Vehicle Will Stop: While bikes are legally accepted as vehicles, and drivers should obey all traffic laws, you can’t always assume they will. Keep an eye out for vehicles pushing the limits and always obey cross-street signals. Though you may be paying attention, drivers may not be.
  • Provide Audible Cues: Don’t be afraid to yell out when you are passing a walking pedestrian. It’s the right thing to do! This avoids any impact and gets everyone where they want to be safely and soundly.

We love sharing Anna Maria Island. You can cruise every nook of the island in style or just lounge out by the water at any of our Anna Maria Island rentals with a pool. The choice is yours- and that’s what makes vacationing so much fun.
